The books listed here are available through most libraries, but since they are available in paperback for under $20 each, you should have your own copy. These are books you'll use every day when you're building.

Building a Multi-Use Barn, by John D. Wagner. If you could only have one book to guide you through the actual construction of a barn, this would be it! Hundreds of detailed photos and illustrations guide you step-by-step through every phase of barn-building, from setting up foundation forms to wiring a light fixture.

House Framing, another great book by John D. Wagner, with over 400 drawings to make each phase of framing crystal clear. The book is especially helpful with roof framing, such as cutting compound angles for dormer rafters.

Small Barn Plans for Owner-Builders, by Craig Wallin. You don't have to pick up a hammer or a paint brush to save thousands on your new barn. This book will show you how to manage your barn building project, just like the professional contractors do, to save an average of 18% of the cost! The book includes complete "study" plans for 12 small barns that you can adapt to your specific needs. Order it at: www.homesteaddesign.com
